Peru using EpiSurveyor for HIV work among indigenous populations

Researchers Magaly Blas and Isaac Alva at the Unit of HIV and STD epidemiology at Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru have been using EpiSurveyor to assess the association between the Human Papilloma Virus and the Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) in indigenous women from the Peruvian Amazon. These researchers want to see if HTLV has a similar behavior as HIV with regards to increasing risk for cervical cancer.

Their use of EpiSurveyor has been so successful that they will be using it for another study, in Lima, concerning HPV prevalence among men who have sex with men.

They will present the results of their research at the mHealth Latin America Summit on March 25, 2011, where John Zoltner of DataDyne will also be presenting recent use of MIP software to provide distance education using SMS.

Attached is a newsletter (in Spanish) detailing this important research.
