The NY Times details the efforts of websites like EveryBlock.com to bring local news and information together outside the context of a traditional newspaper -- something that dovetails nicely with our own own Mobile Information Project (MIP) . The cool thing is that you will be able to create an RSS feed for your own location and use MIP to send that feed to your phone via SMS.

As always, we are thinking of ways to extend the fantastic benefits of projects like EveryBlock from the tiny fraction of people in the world with regular access to the big-screen, broadband Web to the increasing majority of the world's population with access to SMS.

Not coincidentally, EveryBlock is supported by a grant from the same Knight Foundation program (the Knight News Challenge) that is funding MIP, with the goal of coming up with creative new ways to envision, collect, distribute, and reimagine the news.
