Fortune: Mobile Web to Surpass Wired Web?
Jessica Shambora of Fortune magazine has a great article talking about the iPhone-spawned explosion of mobile applications, and she wonders "Does this mean that we'll soon be trading in our PCs in the same way many of us gave up our landlines in favor of our cell phones?"
I'd say that's a good possibility. We in the rich countries tend to think of our own technological path as being the most logical one, but that's only true in a limited way: we have the money to pioneer a lot of technologies that later fall by the wayside, or that are only adopted worldwide after being highly refined.
It's entirely possible that in 10 years the only people that have their own laptop will be writers, artists, and others who always need a big screen. The rest of us will be perfectly content doing most of our stuff on a smaller-screen device -- complemented by some larger-screen appliance at home or the office.
