End of Round One, Polio Camapaign
End of Round One, Polio Camapaign
We are now deep in the 5th round of the Emergency polio campaign in Kenya. The activity is taking place in Riftvalley province targetting districts bordering the larger Turkana District. The districts have had more than three rounds of polio immunization campaign since, march this year with the main objective being stopping the circulation and transmission of the wild polio virus in Kenya. The last case of indeginous polio case in Kenya dates back to 1984 and since then only two outbreaks have been reported with the current outbreak being linked to importation from South Sudan, while the 2006 outbreak in Daab refugee camp was linked to Importation from Somalia. This year alone Kenya have 17 cases of confirmed wild polio virus , all detected in the larger Turkana district.
We only had two days before the 5th round begins and gratefull to technology as we had automated analysis and knew where our weakness were befor heading to the second passage. This strategy is known as short Interval Additonal Doses.Previously we had a break of 28 days before moving to the second round while the new strategy has only 2 days before moving to the next passage. The M&E teeam had a strong monitoring mechanism this time round using the webversion of the Episurveyor via the web www.episurveyor.org.
Teams on the ground offering technical assistance includes WHO Geneva,WHO Afro and CDC Polio stop team from Atlanta. I encourage you all to use the new web version of Episurveyor as its fast, real time data collection and above all enhance quick feedback and cuts on report writting time.
