How EpiSurveyor Web version is helping us Monitoring the Polio campaign in Kenya

We needed to be on top of everything during the campaign. No one wants to know the short comings way past the campaign has ended as the data/information will be of no value. As public health team monitoring the campaign we need real time data as we all know that in order to have a quality campaign one need accurate and fast flow of information in order to act on the strenth and weakness noted on the ground. We turned to EpiSurveyor. Our teams on the ground also needed instant feedback to the healthworkers vaccinating the children and more so for disscusion on their daily review meeting with their respective district management team. The idea behind the daily meeting is to improve on the weakness noted on the said day.

We turned to EpiSurveyor and it came in handy as we were not disappointed. Some of the benefit we got are as follows:

  • Instant feedback from the monitor to either the management/cordinating teams at the district level.
  • Instant Hot report. This report is suppose to be sent to the National level within 24 hours after any major campaigns. Guess what? We didn't have to wait as the minute the campaign ended our report was ready.
  • It would have been impossible to analyse the first passage data and act on the weakness before moving to the second passage as we only had two days break.
  • Snapshot of how the campaign was going on in the 12 district real time and that colleagues who were left in the office could also log in and monitor the progress on the website.
  • Weakness noted were acted upon immediately. Some of the actions taken were redistribution of the vaccines, on the job training for our health workers, staffs redeployment, immediate case investigation of suspected AFP cases, and change of social mobilization strategy (when it was noted that majority of parents source of information was the health workers and the provincial administration).

N.B. Without EpiSurveyor i really don't think it would have been possible. Keep it up DataDyne on the good job done. Lets all join hands in promoting the use of mobile technology in improving public heath, it's easier, exciting and above all you will be on top of the things as there would be no surprises way past the campaign. We all need data for action.
