Moving forward with the MIP SMS project

Moving forward with the MIP SMS project

When I started at DataDyne.org last April, we were just starting to test the MIP. We spent several afternoons sending and logging text messages. Imagine a room full of people talking to our developer via speakerphone and staring deliberately at their cell phones waiting for a
text message to come through.

Fast forward to May of this year. While celebrating their 41st
anniversary with our friends at COOPEUMO, we also celebrated the success of MIP. A year after developing the system, we have nearly 200 farmers/users receiving messages daily. They represent two different project in Chile – DatAgro and Yo Agricultor. Yo Agricultor is a sophisticated web portal for
farmers supported by the Chilean government. They are using MIP to send messages to further their outreach to groups that have more limited internet access.

In addition, we’re excited and encouraged by the initial reports
coming from the IEPI Movil project in Peru, that uses MIP messages to remind nurses and community health workers about important child health and wellness practices.

It is exciting to watch the DatAgro project and the MIP software grow. It is even more exciting to talk to the users and hear how this information is important to them. The growth of the system also invites us to think about the next steps. We look forward to being able to release the software to a larger audience and sharing some of the pearls of wisdom we’ve
learned from implementing the DatAgro project.
